Therapeutic Practitioner

Hours: Part time-, 0.6 or 0.8 FTE. Term time only or year round considered.

Salary: Starting at £16.87 per hour

Accountable to: Senior Therapeutic Practitioner

Based at: OTR premises and other operational locations, including schools and partner settings, with authorised remote working where appropriate

Contract type: Permanent

Purpose of the role 

To provide safe, effective and young-person-centred counselling and therapeutic support on behalf of OTR. Individual therapeutic work will ordinarily remain a substantial component of the role.

The postholder may also contribute to the wider therapeutic service through appropriate group work, assessment, consultation, service development, partnership working and other activities that improve the quality and accessibility of support for children and young people.

Key responsibilities 

Therapeutic practice:

• Provide individual counselling and therapeutic support to children and young people in accordance with OTR’s clinical framework and professional standards.
• Undertake appropriate assessment, collaborative goal setting, review, outcome monitoring and planned therapeutic endings.
• Manage an appropriate caseload and organise therapeutic work effectively within allocated working hours.
• Contribute, where reasonably required, to group-based therapeutic work, workshops, psychoeducation or other appropriate forms of therapeutic support.
• Adapt practice appropriately to the age, needs, identity, communication and circumstances of each young person.

Safeguarding and clinical governance:

• Recognise, assess and respond appropriately to safeguarding, clinical-risk and welfare concerns, seeking advice and escalating concerns without delay.
• Maintain safe professional boundaries and work within the limits of competence, qualification, training and professional responsibility.
• Participate actively in management, clinical and group supervision, reflective practice and case discussion.
• Comply with OTR’s safeguarding, confidentiality, consent, risk-management and clinical-governance requirements.

Records and administration:

• Maintain accurate, timely and professionally appropriate case records on systems authorised by OTR.
• Complete required assessments, outcome measures, safeguarding records and service-monitoring information within agreed timescales.
• Undertake the preparation, follow-up, professional communication and administration associated with therapeutic work.
• Manage cancellations and non-attendance in accordance with OTR procedures and remain available for other appropriate duties during contracted hours.

Teamwork and service contribution:

• Work collaboratively with OTR colleagues, schools, families, health services, community organisations and other professionals where appropriate.
• Attend relevant team meetings, development days, training and organisational activities.
• Contribute reasonably to service review, evaluation, quality improvement and the development of therapeutic resources, programmes and approaches.
• Share learning and contribute to a supportive, reflective and accountable team culture.
• Represent OTR professionally and support positive working relationships with partner organisations.

Professional responsibilities:

• Maintain any qualification, professional membership, registration, accreditation, insurance or clearance required by OTR for the role.
• Complete mandatory training and refresher activity identified by OTR, including safeguarding training.
• Maintain appropriate continuing professional development and raise learning or support needs through supervision and line management.
• Work in accordance with OTR’s values, policies, procedures and commitment to equality, diversity, inclusion and anti-discriminatory practice.
• Notify OTR promptly of any matter that may materially affect suitability to practise safely.
