Job Outline: We are looking for an energetic, compassionate and resourceful person with a positive, can-do attitude to join our Women’s Centre team. This is an active, varied role for someone who enjoys engaging people, creating opportunities, facilitating groups and making things happen.

The Women’s Centre is a welcoming, safe and non-judgemental environment for women who may be experiencing challenges including domestic or sexual abuse, trauma, homelessness, substance use, exploitation, isolation or involvement with the criminal justice system. We work with women as individuals, recognising their strengths, interests, choices and aspirations.

Your principal responsibility will be to encourage participation and plan, develop and deliver enjoyable, purposeful activities that build confidence, skills, wellbeing and connections. You will help women overcome barriers to taking part, contribute to our drop-in service and link women with opportunities across the Centre and with partners.

We recognise that engagement and progress are not always straightforward. You will bring patience and an understanding of trauma, alongside initiative, practical problem-solving, resilience and sound professional judgement. You will work closely with colleagues, volunteers and partners, maintaining clear boundaries and using supervision and team support appropriately.

Bring your energy, ideas and can-do attitude. Help women discover new opportunities.

Does this sound like you?

Do you enjoy bringing people together, trying new ideas and making things happen? Can you motivate others, stay positive when plans change and combine compassion with a practical, get-stuck-in approach? We would love to hear from you.

About our women’s centre

At the Safer Wales Women’s Centre, women can connect with others, take part in activities, access support and build on their own strengths. We work alongside women facing a range of challenges, including trauma, abuse, homelessness, criminal justice and social isolation, in a safe, welcoming and non-judgemental space.

What you’ll do

This is an activity and engagement role at its heart. You will create and facilitate enjoyable, meaningful group and individual activities; encourage women to get involved at their own pace; and open-up opportunities for wellbeing, confidence, skills, volunteering and connection. You will also contribute to the drop-in service and work with colleagues, volunteers and partners.

What you’ll bring

Energy, creativity, resilience and initiative. You will build trust with people from different backgrounds and respond constructively when things are busy or unpredictable. You will understand why trauma-informed, strengths-based working matters, respect women’s choices, maintain professional boundaries and know when to ask for support.

Different experience? We still want to hear from you

You do not need to have worked in a specialist women’s service. Relevant experience could come from community work, youth work, education, group facilitation, volunteering, creative projects or other roles where you have engaged and motivated people.

If you are resourceful, warm and willing to roll up your sleeves, this could be the role for you.

Join us in creating a space where women feel safe, supported, and empowered to thrive.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, organise, facilitate and review individual and group activities focused on wellbeing, life skills, creativity, personal development, social connection and enjoyment.
  • Actively reach out to and motivate women to participate, listening to their ideas and adapting activities to differing interests, needs, confidence levels and barriers to engagement.
  • Use trauma-informed, strengths-based and person-centred practice to build trust, recognise individual strengths and support women’s choices and goals without imposing expectations of progress.
  • Contribute positively to the day-to-day running of the drop-in service, offering practical information, encouragement and proportionate one-to-one support, and referring or connecting women to specialist support where appropriate.
  • Create and promote opportunities for women to access training, volunteering, mentoring, community activities and other services that support their interests and aspirations.
  • Bring ideas, energy and initiative to the ongoing development of the activities programme; respond constructively when plans change and find safe, practical ways forward.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, volunteers, mentors, Safer Wales services and partner agencies, including probation, to provide coordinated and consistent opportunities for women.
  • Support and encourage volunteers and mentors involved in activities, within agreed responsibilities and organisational procedures.
  • Maintain a welcoming, inclusive and safe environment; uphold appropriate professional boundaries and respond calmly and appropriately to challenging situations, safeguarding concerns or risks.
  • Maintain accurate, timely and confidential records of engagement and activities, and contribute to monitoring, feedback and service improvement.
  • Work within Safer Wales policies and procedures, including safeguarding, health and safety, equality, diversity, confidentiality and information sharing; participate actively in supervision and team learning.
  • Work flexibly across Centre and community settings, including occasional evenings or weekends where required.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Energy and initiative: A positive, enthusiastic and proactive can-do approach, with the confidence to take responsibility and get things done.
  • Engagement skills: Experience of engaging, encouraging or motivating people from a variety of backgrounds, including those who face barriers to participation.
  • Activities and groups: Experience or demonstrable ability to plan, organise and facilitate inclusive, engaging activities with individuals or groups.
  • Trauma-informed understanding: An understanding of how trauma, abuse and disadvantage may affect trust, relationships, behaviour and engagement, and the ability to respond sensitively and without judgement.
  • Strengths-based practice: Ability to recognise and build on people’s strengths, interests and aspirations, promoting choice, participation, confidence and independence.
  • Resilience and adaptability: Ability to stay calm, constructive and effective when circumstances are challenging or unpredictable, to adjust plans, maintain boundaries and seek support appropriately.
  • Practical problem-solving: Resourcefulness, creativity and sound judgement in overcoming barriers and finding realistic ways to make activities accessible and successful.
  • Communication and teamwork: Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively while also using initiative and working independently when appropriate.
  • Safe and accountable practice: Understanding of safeguarding, confidentiality, equality and diversity, and commitment to accurate records, safe working and professional boundaries.
  • Learning and flexibility: Willingness to reflect, take part in supervision, learn from feedback and work flexibly, including occasional evenings and weekends.

Desirable

  • Experience of working with women affected by trauma, abuse, homelessness, exploitation, substance use or the criminal justice system.
  • Experience in community development, youth work, education, creative or wellbeing activities, volunteering, mentoring or other participation-focused settings.
  • Experience of working alongside or supporting volunteers or mentors.
  • A relevant professional or vocational qualification.
  • Welsh language skills.
  • A full driving licence and access to transport.

If this role matches your skills, experience and interest in supporting vulnerable women, we encourage you to apply by completing the application form. Please note that CVs will not be accepted.
