Camcycle is a bold and influential cycle advocacy charity. We campaign for more cycling so that everyone who lives and works in Cambridgeshire can enjoy a better future. This role is an exciting opportunity to shape the cycling – and wider transport – networks across Cambridgeshire. We’re looking for a confident and visionary transport professional who can build on Camcycle’s track record of infrastructure expertise and campaigning success.
The Active Travel Design Lead is our charity’s technical expert, representing the needs of those who cycle – and those who would like to cycle – in consultations and meetings with the local authorities delivering and approving planning and transport schemes. The role uses an evidence-based approach to inform and influence decision-making, drawing on local and national policy and guidance, international best practice and the lived experience of our members and supporters. Building on Camcycle’s 30 years of campaigning expertise, the role holder will embody and enhance our charity’s reputation as an informed, approachable and practical ‘critical friend’ to all those designing and implementing schemes that will include or affect cycling.
Responsibilities include:
- Developing detailed visions for cycle infrastructure, places and transport networks in and around Cambridge.
- Scrutinising and responding to planning applications and transport-related consultations.
- Building and maintaining relationships with stakeholders, including councillors, officers, developers, community groups, Camcycle members and the Cambridgeshire Sustainable Travel Alliance (of which we are a founding organisation).
- Developing practical and positive technical solutions focused on high-quality outcomes for cycling that help build consensus between stakeholders and progress scheme delivery.
- Leading strategic campaigning projects such as community-led data gathering with Telraam traffic monitors.
Your skills and experience:
You will be a passionate advocate for sustainable transport and equitable urban design, with experience as a transport professional in the public or private sector in a role such as design engineer or transport planner. With a good level of technical knowledge of planning policy and best practice in cycle infrastructure design, you will be confident scrutinising proposals for everything from detailed streetscape improvements to large-scale development masterplans, able to develop and champion suggestions that deliver the best outcomes for people who cycle.
How to apply:
Please send your CV and a supporting statement after clicking on apply by 11.59pm on Monday 15 June. Interviews will begin on Friday 26 June.

We are a local charity which has been working for more, better and safer cycling in the Cambridge area since 1995. Our work is guided by the board of trustees and our staff team with much of what we do achieved by our dedicated volunteers. Many of the cycle facilities such as paths, lanes, traffic signals, bridges and cycle parks in the region would not exist without the campaigning of our members.
